Rolled Fretboard Edges

Every neck is carved by hand and receives heavy fingerboard edge-rolling. This gives the guitar a worn-in, comfortable feel that mimics an instrument played for 40 years. Fret ends are filed at a custom angle and individually crowned to prevent fret sprout or sharp corners.

"The neck shape should completely disappear in the player's hands. If you are thinking about the neck, I didn't carve it right." — MC

About Michael Caldwell

Pittsburgh Luthier. Repairman. Builder.

Michael Caldwell’s reputation in the guitar community is built on wood chips and workbench hours. Serving as the head repair luthier at N' Stuff Music for decades, he spent years diagnosing, fixing, and setting up thousands of vintage and modern instruments.

This repair-bench perspective informs every custom guitar he builds. Having analyzed what makes guitars fail and what makes them feel magic, he shapes neck carves, shapes fret joints, and wires cavities so that they stand up to years of road use.

“A great guitar should feel broken-in and completely personal from the moment you lift it out of the case. The instrument should disappear under your hand.”
